Shovels & Rope celebrate the 10th anniversary of their breakout debut, O’ Be Joyful, with a double 180g LP edition, featuring all new cover art, packaging, and a B-disc of new live recordings—essential listening for old fans and newcomers alike.
Released to much acclaim in 2012, O’ Be Joyful—the Americana award-winning album from husband and wife singer-songwriters Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent—paved its own lane of punk-folk and went on to sell over 140,000 units in the US, spawned the Triple A radio hit “Birmingham,” and landed on best-of-the-year lists published by NPR, American Songwriter, and Paste Magazine.
Much of the project’s tracking occurred during stops on the duo’s robust touring schedule: fiddle parts for “This Means War” and “Keeper” were recorded in between soundcheck and showtime in Louisville; the undulating organ on “Shank Hill St.” in a van somewhere between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. A literal momentum, then, underscores the album in its entirety. Each track moves with the intensity and thrill of something like a fast drive in a small town.
Listeners have two choices: get in or get out of the way.
